If you’ve previously been intimated by patterns that contain the back post double crochet stitch, fear not! I have an easy step-by-step tutorial for you to follow!
The back post double crochet (BPdc) is similar to the double crochet stitch, but instead of working under the top two loops of the stitch you will work your hook around the body, or post, of the stitch:
This stitch is not difficult to master and once you’ve learned the basics you’ll find you can whizz through any pattern that contains it.

HOW TO WORK THE BACK POST DOUBLE CROCHET STITCH
NOTES
- US crochet terms used.
- In my sample piece below, I’ve worked a couple of regular double crochet stitches to better highlight what the completed BPdc will look like.
Step 1.
Yarn over:
Step 2.
Take your hook to the back of your work and place it behind the post you wish to work around:
Step 3.
Now bring your hook through to the front of your work:
Step 4.
Push your hook back through to the back of your work:
The image below shows you the view from the back of the work; the post will lie over your hook at the back:
Step 5.
Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on your hook:
Step 6.
Yarn over and pull through 2 loops. You will have 2 loops left on your hook:
Step 7.
Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops. You have just completed the BPdc stitch:
In the image below, I’ve worked a few stitches. You can see that they sit at the back of the work slightly, with a raised ridge at the front:
